Lakhs of trucks went off the roads on Monday morning in response to the nationwide indefinite strike called by the All India Motor Transport Congress to protest against frequent hikes in diesel prices and value added tax.
The strike is likely to put pressure on prices of essential commodities.
Many state governments, including Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, have said they are taking adequate measures to ensure that the supply of essential commodities and services is not affected.
According to Delhi Transport Minister Ajay Makan, there could be problems relating to perishable items, as the capital is largely dependent on neighbouring states for supply of vegetables, fruits and milk.
According to an estimate, the strike is likely to cost Rs 10,000-12,000 crore to the government while the transport industry will also lose Rs 500 crore per day.
