The Tripura election department has banned the use of flags, banners and festoons made of plastic during campaigning by political parties for the February 26 assembly poll, official sources said on Wednesday.

District magistrates and superintendents of police of all the four districts of the state have been directed to take action against the political parties violating the ban order, the sources said.

The order came in the wake of State Pollution Control Board urging the election department on the plea that indiscriminate use of flags, festoons and banners made of plastic by political parties in the campaign pose a threat to the environment.

The chairman of the Board, Mihir Deb, wrote a letter recently to Chief Electoral Officer Debasish Sircar to take necessary steps in this regard, the sources said.
