The Rajasthan high court on Wednesday directed the Union government and the Railway Board to provide a coupe with trained medical personnel in all long-distance trains.

The court said the order must be implemented in 60 days.

A division bench comprising Justice Shiv Kumar Sharma and Justice Karni Singh Rathore ordered that a team of one medical officer, a male nurse and an attendant travel in all long-distance trains.

It was disposing of a public interest petition praying for suitable medical facilities at railway stations.

The court asked the Union government and Railway Board to ensure that each zonal railway kept a coupe of four berths equipped with oxygen cylinders, life-saving drugs and trained medical staff at standby for emergencies.

It also directed that a medical team must be relieved after covering "a distance of 500 km, or, as directed by the Railway Board."

The court also directed Doordarshan (National) and All India Radio to create awareness about these facilities.
