Tibetans protest at Chinese Embassy in Delhi

December 06, 2005 19:15 IST

About 40 Tibetans were detained by police on Tuesday afternoon when they tried to forcibly enter the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi's high-security Chanakyapuri area.

The demonstrators, numbering about 50, were protesting in front of the Chinese Embassy at Kautilya Marg, against the alleged killing of a monk in China, according to sources.

The protestors went to the side gate of the Embassy and heckled the staff. They also damaged some property, sources added. They were later taken to Chanakyapuri police station, where some of them were detained.

A senior police officer denied reports of clashes and damage to Embassy property. He said there was information about a demonstration being held and therefore, necessary preparations had been made.

"After the protestors held a demonstration and raised slogans, we took them in. While some of them have been detained, rest were let off," the officer added.
