Three persons wanted in connection with cow slaughter cases were arrested following an encounter with police in Gosainganj area here, with one of them sustaining a bullet injury, police said on Wednesday.

Additional Superintendent of Police Akhand Pratap Singh said the police, acting on a tip-off, intercepted three suspects riding a motorcycle near the Itkauli forest area late Tuesday night.

On being surrounded, the accused attempted to flee and opened fire at the police team, prompting retaliatory firing in self-defence, in which one of the suspects was injured, Singh said.

The injured accused was identified as Afroz, a resident of Sirwara Sharikpur. The other two arrestees were identified as Mohammad Gulfam, alias Imran and Azad, the police said.

All three were wanted in cases related to cow slaughter, they added.

Two country-made pistols, two empty cartridges and one live cartridge were recovered from their possession, the officer added.

The injured accused was taken to the Community Health Centre in Jaisinghpur, and further legal proceedings are underway, the police said.
