These states have most number of minor rape victims

Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka had the most number of minor rape victims in 2016.

After the horrific rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua, two more incidents of rape and murder of minors -- in Surat, Gujarat, and Etah, Uttar Pradesh -- have since come to light.

Rediff Labs analyses the state-wise data on incidents of child rape issued by the National Crime Records Bureau for 2016. 

The map above shows how many incidents of rape of minors were reported in each state during the year 2016.

The data is divided into three groups according to the victims' age, that is, below 6 years, between 6 and 12 years and between 12 and 18 years.

The data shows that Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh had the most number of victims in two age groups: below six years, and 6-12 years.

In the case of victims belonging to the age group of 12-18 years, the states with the highest number of rape cases were Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka.

Overall, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka had the most number of minor rape victims in 2016.
