Battling for life for a week, traffic constable Anil Aitodekar, who was undergoing treatment in a Mumbai hospital after being set on fire by an autorickshaw driver, died on Wednesday, the police said.

"Constable Aitodekar succumbed to burn injuries at Massena Hospital in Byculla," said P Jadhav, senior inspector at Manikpur police station.

On October 27, autorickshaw driver Mahendra Kevat had set ablaze 44-year-old Aitodekar after the constable fined him for not following traffic rules at Vasai in Thane district, police said.

As Kevat broke the rules, Aitodekar stopped his autorickshaw and asked for required documents. As the driver did not posses them, he was fined by the constable.

Irked over this, Kevat returned after some time with petrol in a small bucket and threw it on the constable before setting him on fire, Jadhav said, adding that the locals tried to catch Kevat but in vain.

The accused was earlier charged with relevant Indian Penal Code Sections including 307 for attempt to murder. "Now, the accused would be charged with murder as well," said Jadhav, adding that a further probe was on.
