Terror in Brussels: World monuments light up in Belgian flag colours

Many monuments across the world were lit up in the colours of the Belgian flag in solidarity with the victims of Tuesday's attacks in Brussels.

The World Trade Centre was lit in solidarity with Belgium after the bombings in Brussels.New York Governor Andrew Cuomo posted a picture of the 408-foot spire colored black, yellow and red on twitter and said it was lit "in solemn solidarity with the people of Belgium."

The Eiffel Tower was illuminated Tuesday night in the colours of the Belgian flag in a sign of solidarity with its neighbour following deadly terror attacks.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo used the hashtag #NousSommesUnis, which translates to “we are united,” to announce the iconic Parisian symbol would be lit up Tuesday night in black, yellow and red to pay homage to the people of Belgium.

“In solidarity with the people of Brussels, #Paris illuminate tonight @LaTourEiffel the colors of the Belgian flag. #WeAreUnited,” Hidalgo tweeted earlier Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Berlin’s landmark Brandenburg Gate, which after the November attacks in Paris was illuminated with the French colors of red, white and blue, also was lit up in Belgian colors. A few blocks away, some people laid flowers and lit candles outside the Belgian Embassy.

In another show of solidarity, Rome lit up its famed Trevi Fountain and its city hall with the colours of the Belgian flag.

The black, yellow, and red colours of the Belgian flag were also projected on the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The courthouse in Lyon, France paid tribute to the victims by painting the building in Belgian flag colours.

Explosions at an airport and a downtown metro stop during morning rush hour rocked the Belgian capital Tuesday, killing over 30 people, wounding more than 150 and shutting down all public transportation.
