A 17-year old youth was killed in violent clashes between protestors and security forces that erupted in Srinagar's old city areas after the Friday prayers.
A senior police officer said Tufail Ahmad Mattoo, a class 12 student died while he was being shifted to hospital after getting critically wounded during the clashes near Gani Memorial stadium in the Rajouri Kadal area of the old city. "We are ascertaining the cause of death," the officer added. However, the locals alleged the youth was killed by the security forces.
Clashes between the protestors and security forces have become a regular feature in old city areas. An angry mob roughed up a policeman identified as Mushtaq Ahmad and later snatched his service rifle. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
The police and Central Reserve Police Force reinforcements were moved into the old city areas as the trouble spread. The security forces had to use batons, tear gas against the groups of stone pelting youth. The youth, however, continued to regroup in lanes and by-lanes of the old city areas. The clashes were continuing till late on Friday evening causing tension in the area.
