Don't attend House, Speaker tells MPs

December 12, 2005

Expressing serious concern over members of Parliament caught on camera allegedly accepting bribe for asking questions in Parliament, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee Monday requested those MPs not to attend the House until the matter was looked into and a decision taken.

In a suo motu statement, Chatterjee said it was a serious matter, which would be looked into with all importance it deserved.

"I have already spoken to and discussed with all leaders of different parties, including the Leader of the Opposition, and all have agreed that the matter is extremely serious if proved correct," Chatterjee said. He said he would certainly ask the members concerned what had happened.

"In the meantime, I am making a personal request to all of them, not to attend the session of the House until the matter is looked into and a decision taken," he continued.

In a sting operation,  TV channel Aaj Tak had caught MPs from different parties accepting money for asking questions in Parliament.
