Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj held a meeting with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday morning to discuss the various aspects of the security threat to BJP Member of Parliament Varun Gandhi.
However, Swaraj expressed her dissatisfaction over the outcome of the meeting. "I will not give the details of our conversation but I can tell you that there were differences in the perception of threat to Varun Gandhi," she told a press conference later in the day.
She had earlier accused the home minister of leaking out the details of the letter written to her by Chidambaram.
"He first tried to put the blame on me and said that I may have shown the letter to (Varun's mother and BJP MP) Maneka Gandhi, who may have leaked it to the media. But he had to admit that his own department was responsible, when I showed him the SMS sent to journalists by the Home Ministry, divulging the contents of the letter. The ministry even put the letter on the Press Information Bureau's website," she said.
According to her, Chidambaram eventually admitted that it was his ministry that was at fault.
"I am not going to say if I had asked for Z plus security (for Varun) or what he had offered. Though I had not told the media about the meeting, the television channels were present in good strength when I came out," she pointed out.
Intelligence sources claimed that Sushma had asked for Z plus security for Varun, who faces threats following his fiery anti-Muslim speeches, but her request was turned down by Chidambaram.
