The death of a 24 year old man in Surat has raised questions if he succumbed to plague.
The victim, Deepak Parsaryya, came from the Katargam area in the city which had been submerged for six days in the recent floods in Surat.
Doctors at the Mahavir hospital in the city said Deepak succumbed to haemorragic viral fever -- an ailment where the lungs stop functioning, a symptom similar to victims of plague.
Gujarat government officials said they were awaiting Parsayya's post-mortem report.
The Academy for Disaster Management, Education, Planning and Training, Chennai, had recently issued a plague health alert to non-government organisations and residents of Surat after the city remained flooded for several days recently.
Surat experienced a plague outbreak in 1994 after which the city was completely cleaned up.
