Sonia comment not aimed at Left: Congress

March 29, 2006 19:39 IST

The Congress Wednesday clarified that Congress president Sonia Gandhi did not refer to any political party in particular, let alone the Left parties, when she spoke of political parties communalising foreign policy in a letter published in the Congress mouthpiece Sandesh.

Stating that Sonia did not mention the Left parties in her write up, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said Sonia was opposed to any form of communalism being brought into foregin policy.

"It would be wrong in principle on the part of any party to bring in communalism into foreign policy, to which she referred," Singhvi clarified.

About the opposition being voiced by the Left parties, Singhvi said Sonia was not opposed to the criticism by the Left of the government's policies. "What she was opposed to in principle was the bringing in of communalism in foreign policy by any party. It was a principled statement," he added.

When some journalists persisted saying she had referred to the Left parties, he said, "You are free to draw your own conclusions."
