Khalistan supporters in Britain are pumping in money to fund terrorist activities in Punjab, state police chief NPS Aulakh has said.

Speaking to BBC's File on 4 programme on Tuesday, Punjab's director general of police, said money was reaching terrorists from Britain-based supporters via informal funding channels in the Sikh community.

The money was being used to attract young people to terrorist groups, he added.

"We have had some intelligence reports that some people in Britain were involved in funding terror activities. Definitely some of the money was being used to fund terrorist activities in the Punjab," Aulakh said.

He added that funding was a way of attracting more and more youth into the fold of terrorism -- giving them money for carrying out terrorist activities.

"If the funds are dried out, I think terrorism can be checked," he added.

Sunny Hundal, founder of think-tank New Generation, said UK's Sikh community had to help curb UK-based extremists and their cash aid for terror tactics.

"The vast majority of Sikhs want nothing to do with them but they must take some of the blame. Not enough is being done to root them out," he said.

Some members of the Sikh community told File On 4 that they feared extremists could use Sikh temples to pursue their objectives.
