The bail bonds of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Navjot Singh Sidhu and his friend who were sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment, were accepted by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Chandigarh on Thursday.

Chandigarh BJP chief Yashpal Mahajan submitted bonds for Sidhu, while a local advocate Ashok Chouhan submitted them for Rupinder Singh Sandhu. The bail bonds of Rs 10,000 each were accepted by Chief Judicial Magistrate Y S Rathore.

Besides Sidhu, BJP legal cell convener and former MP Satyapal Jain among others, including supporters of the cricketer-turned-politician, were present in the court.

The 43-year-old former cricketer, who resigned as BJP member of Lok Sabha last week, and his friend Sandhu were sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment by Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday for causing the death of an elderly man in Patiala 18 years ago.

The division bench of the High Court had also suspended their sentence till January 31.

Coming out of the court premises, Sidhu said he would move a special leave petiton in the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict soon.

"I am not worried by the court's verdict against me. I will soon move the Supreme Court and law will take its own course," he told reporters.

"I am a sportsperson. I have seen several ups and downs. I am taking these in true spirits," he added.

Jain, who was accompanying Sidhu, said the former cricketer would move the Supreme Court in the next two to three days.

"I am hopeful he will get justice from the Supreme Court," he said, adding "Sidhu is a free man now."

Seeking to play down the entry of vehicle carrying Sidhu into the court complex, Jain said, "Sidhu is not at fault. He sat in another car while we had given a number of other vehicles which were supposed to bring him to court."

Jain, who is also a senior advocate of the high court, said Sidhu would address a Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP rally in Moga district.
