S Bangrappa of the Samajwadi Party on Sunday won the June 2 bypoll to the Shimoga Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka.
Bangarappa, former chief minister of Karnataka, defeated his nearest Congress rival in a keenly fought election by a margin of over 28,000 votes.
With Bangarappa's victory, the SP has opened its account in Karnataka.
