In an alleged case of police brutality, two Dalit women were purportedly beaten up by a sub-inspector and his subordinates inside outer Delhi’s Rohini south police station, following which four police personnel were on Saturday suspended.

The women, in their complaint, have alleged that the sub-inspector and some women police personnel thrashed them inside the police station on Friday, forcing them to confess in a case of robbery.

The victims, who are in their early twenties, were taken to the police station for questioning at 9:30 am on Friday and left around 5 pm.

The women were later taken to AmbedkarHospital for treatment where a large number of locals created ruckus over the alleged custodial brutality. Heavy police deployment had to be made to bring the situation under control.

Giving the details of the incident, the victims’ mothers, who reside in I-block of Mangolpuri, told reporters that around four-five months ago, owner of the firm where their daughters worked had filed a case of theft with the police.

“Despite the fact that police had already quizzed both the daughters in the past, they called them again to police station yesterday around 9.30 am and tortured them till 5 pm, without serving them food and water. Our daughters are unable to move,” they alleged.

Four police personnel, including sub-inspector Rajveer who had allegedly beaten the two women, were on Saturday suspended, said Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat. The other three suspended are women constables deputed at the police station.

An FIR has been registered in this regard under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 330 (voluntarily causing hurt to extort confession), 342 (wrongful confinement), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC and under the SC Act, Bhagat said. A departmental enquiry has been initiated in this connection and investigation is underway, he said.

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Mangolpuri Rakhi Bidlan has demanded immediate sacking of the police personnel while adding that she would be meet Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, LG Najeeb Jung and Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi to apprise them about the brutality and severity of the issue.
