Police on Friday began investigation on a complaint registered by Bharatiya Janata Party National Secretary and former Union Minister Shahnawaz Hussain that he had received threat calls purportedly from Dubai-based underworld don Chhota Shakeel asking him to snap his relation with the saffron party.
"A complaint has been registered with the Kotwali police station in Patna on the statement of the BJP leader," Inspector General (Headquarters) Anil Sinha told PTI.
"We have already beefed up Shahnawaz's security and an investigation has started," Sinha said, refusing to share more information on the grounds that it may hamper the ongoing probe.
"We have taken the matter seriously and are trying to carry forward the investigation to a logical end," he said.
Shahnawaz, one of the prominent Muslim faces of the BJP, complained to the Director General of Police A R Sinha on Wednesday that he had received three calls on his cell phone from the gangster threatening to eliminate him if he continued to be in the saffron party.
"The caller used abusive language when I wanted to know who exactly he was. He told me Chhota Shakeel ko nahin janta (Don't you know Chhota Shakeel?) and liberally used expletives... After three calls, I switched off the phone," Shahnawaz had said.
