Samba attack: Omar stresses need to strengthen security measures

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday reviewed the functioning of security grid at a high level meeting in winter capital Jammu following the twin militant attacks on Thursday that left four army personnel including a lieutenant colonel, four cops and two civilians dead.

An official statement said top brass of civil, army, paramilitary and state police was present in the meeting in which the chief minister was apprised of the details of the operations conducted to combat the terrorist attacks at Hiranagar and Samba.

The chief minister was briefed about the functioning of security grid in Jammu and Kashmir as also the coordination between various security agencies to anticipate and combat terrorist attacks.

While expressing deep sorrow over the loss of security personnel and civilians in the attacks, the chief minister stressed the need for further strengthening the surveillance and security measures to avoid such acts in future.

Among others, the meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, GOC-in-C Northern Command, Lt Gen. Sanjiv Chachra, state home commissioner, Suresh Kumar, director general of police, Ashok Prasad, senior army and police officers.

A defence statement said, “Omar Abdullah, civilian and military dignitaries’ paid floral tribute to martyr and brave soldier, Dafadar (Havildar) Indra Singh at a solemn wreath laying ceremony at Air Force Station Jammu. Dafadar Indra Singh attained martyrdom along with other three martyrs, Lt Col Bikram Jeet Singh, Sowar (Sepoy) Kiran Kumar Reddy and Sowar Meesala Srinavas during a fierce encounter with terrorists at Samba Garrison on September 26.”
