Congress on Sunday expressed the hope that the death sentence awarded to ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein will go through credible due process to the satisfaction of the people of Iraq and that the verdict will not adversely affect peace and democracy in the West Asian country.

Party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi noted that there was an automatic appeal against the death sentence.

"We hope and believe that these life and death decisions will be decided through credible due process to the satisfaction of the people of Iraq," he said.

Congress believes in peace and tranquility and democratic process for the people of Iraq, he said adding, "we hope and trust that this verdict will not adversely affect this process," he said.
