Russian miners rescued

October 29, 2003 15:45 IST

In a dramatic rescue effort, 11 of 13 miners trapped for six days in a flooded coalmine in southern Russia have been brought to the surface, report agencies.

One is reported dead and another is missing. Thirty-three other miners were rescued on Saturday.

The miners were trapped nearly a kilometer underground after a lake burst into their shaft on October 23 in Novoshakhtinsk, near the Ukrainian border about 1000 km south of Moscow. The water short-circuited the elevators and cut off  light and power.

Over 800 rescuers worked round the clock, tunneling through the solid rock from an adjacent mine, using explosives, drilling and digging equipment, towards the men's presumed position.
