Three persons were, on Thursday, sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court for lynching three members of a Sikh family during the 1984 riots that followed the assassination of Indira Gandhi.

The court, however, rejected the prosecution's contention that the offence fell under the 'rarest of the rare' category for which the three convicts -- Harprasad Bhardwaj, R P Tiwari and Jagdish Giri -- should get death penalty.
