The Central Bureau of Investigation is waiting for a confirmation from the Thailand police about the arrest of top LTTE leader Kumaran Padmanathan.
Addressing a joint press conference with Interpol Secretary General Ronald K Noble, CBI director Vijay Shankar said, "The CBI has written to the External Affairs Ministry about it.". Padmanathan allegedly financed the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
"We have approached the Thai authorities and also the Bangkok Interpol to confirm the detention. We have not got any response till now," said Shanker on the sidelines of an Interpol Conference on cyber crime in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The CBI director expressed confidence that the Thai government will extend all possible assistance to India if Padmanathan has been arrested.
Sources in the CBI said on Tuesday that 52-year-old Padmanathan, also known as Shanmugam Kumaran Tharmalingham, had been detained in Bangkok for his alleged involvement in an international arms racket.
Asked how much time it would take to get a confirmation, Noble said that the concerned government has to seek the judiciary's approval first.
