Hours after a major under-sea earthquake near the Nicobar Islands sparked fears of a tsunami, two strong aftershocks jolted the area on Monday morning, but no casualty or damage to property was reported.

The fresh quakes, measuring 5.3 and 5.7 on the Richter scale, were recorded at 7.47 am and 8.56 am, the Meteorological Department said.

While the first one was epicentred in the Nicobar Islands, the second originated off the west coast.

A quake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale had struck the island group at 9.12 pm on Sunday night. Its epicentre was 60 km southwest of Nicobar Islands and 420 km from Port Blair.

The temblor, which came seven months after the devastating tsunami waves of December 26, 2004, sparked fear among the residents, but did not cause loss of life or damage to property.
