Congress Member of Legislative Assembly Rumi Nath and her second husband Jaki Jakir, who were beaten up by an angry mob in Karimganj in Assam and seriously injured, were on Saturday treated by a team of doctors of the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.

The two were beaten up by an angry mob in Naksatra Hotel in Karimganj, after the MLA surveyed the flood situation in her Borkhola constituency on Friday night.

Irked about Rumi Nath marrying for a second time without divorcing her first husband, an angry mob of more than 200 people descended on the hotel late on Friday night and assaulted her.

Nath, who was pregnant, and her husband Jaki Jakir were severely injured as a result of the attack. They were later escorted back by the police to her MLA quarter.

Immediately on her arrival in Guwahati, the MLA and her husband were treated by a team of four specialist doctors of the Guwahati Medical College Hospital and were reportedly out of danger.

The injured MLA said it was an "unfortunate incident" and the culprits who had "outraged the modesty of a woman" should be brought to book.

Nath and her husband were being guarded in their MLA quarter by a contingent of police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel.
