The United States has given up hope that India will send troops to Iraq, Secretary of State Colin Powell told CNN on Sunday.

"The Indians, they have indicated they would not be in a position to provide troops. And I don't expect that position to change," he said.

Powell said he was disappointed with India's decision.

He said the US could not count anymore on a large number of international troops for deployment in Iraq. "But is there still the possibility of more troop contributors? Yes."

The secretary of state also said that "within the next two days", the US would come up with a second version of the United Nations resolution for expanding the role for the multilateral agency in Iraq.

However, he said he could not put a timeframe for the passage of the UN resolution.
