A bill to repeal the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), 2002 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday amid stiff opposition by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Speaker Somnath Chatterjee allowed introduction of the bill, piloted by Minister of State for Home S Raghupathy, after a voice vote going in its favour.
BJP Deputy Leader V K Malhotra said his party opposed the bill on the ground that issues pertaining to national security were involved.
The previous BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government had got approval for POTA in a joint sitting of Parliament.
