The Election Commission on Monday decided to get into action to prepare for the state polls in Nagaland, Tripura and Mehalaya in the first week of March next year.

"We have witnessed major success in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh where there was not one violent incident. Now, without pausing for even a breath, the Election Commission will march ahead to conduct polls in north-eastern states," said a EC source.

"It takes three to four months to prepare for state polls," said the source, adding that the Election Commission shall commence the process to hold polls in north-eastern states.

Internal meetings have begun in the Election Commission to get into the poll mode in north-eastern states. The Nagaland assembly's term ends on March 20, Tripura assembly's on  March 16 while Mehalaya assembly's term ends on March 10.

The counting of votes in these three states should be over by March 7. The polls are likely to be held in the last week of February and the first week of March.
