The police on Thursday evening thwarted a deadly car bomb attack on the busy Jammu Srinagar national highway by-pass near Chanpora in capital city.

A senior police officer said the car bomb was defused before it could explode by the bomb disposal squad of the state police. This is the first attempt by militants to strike in capital Srinagar in a big way. Last month, a powerful car bomb explosion had rocked south Kashmir Bejibehara town killing one person and wounding 25 others.

Kashmir is having a booming tourist season mainly because of peaceful conditions for the second year running.

"The BD squad defused the explosive device planted inside the car along with two LPG cylinders. A major tragedy was averted," the officer said.
