A Pakistan military court on Friday sentenced 5 people to death for their involvement in a plot to kill President Pervez Musharraf in 2003.

Three others were awarded different jail terms by the court for their roles in the failed assassination attempt in December 2003, Army spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said.

Those given the death sentence were Arshad Mehmood, a soldier, and 4 civilians -- Zubair Ahmed, Rashid Qureshi, Ghulam Sarwar Bhatti and Akhlaq Ahmed, he said, adding among the other 3, one was awarded life imprisonment and 2 given jail terms of 15 and 20 years.

The ruling came days after the execution of Pakistani army man Islamuddin Siddiqui for his role in another failed assassination attempt on Musharraf the same year.

The 8 persons sentenced on Friday were involved in the second of the two bombings targetting Musharraf's motorcade in Rawalpindi in December 2003, Sultan said.

Sultan did not say where the men were tried but said 'they were tried and awarded punishment under the legal provisions.'
