El Chapo extradited to US: When he was captured

January 20, 2017

Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, Mexico's drug baron who was captured last January, was extradited to the United States on Thursday.
After he was captured on January 8, 2016, Mexican officials allowed cameras to glimpse inside the safe house where El Chapo was hiding before to his arrest.
The home was badly damaged in the raid that captured the fugitive.
El Chapo had escaped Mexico's Altiplano jail in July 2015 by climbing into a hole in the floor beneath his shower, and through a 1.5 km tunnel leading to a nearby construction site.

El Chapo gave Mexican security forces the slip by opening a secret doorway hidden behind a mirror and descending into a sophisticated tunnel leading to the city's drains.
The infamous head of the Sinaloa drug cartel was arrested after a manhunt that followed his escape by tunnelling out of a Mexican maximum security prison in July 2015.
