The Indian Air Force on Monday conducted air trial exercise of Jaguar and Mirage-2000 fighter planes over the Bay of Bengal near Chandipur, about 15 km from Balasore.

The Pilotless Target Aircraft Lakshya was used as a support system providing the target for the exercise, defence sources said.

Lakshya was test flown from launch complex No. 2 of the Integrated Test Range at about 11.15 am.

The exercise was carried out to test the target locating and precision firing capabilities of fighter pilots, the sources said.

Lakshya, already inducted into the IAF in 2000, is a subsonic reusable aerial target system and is remote-controlled from the ground.

It is designed to impart training to both air-borne and air-defence pilots for weapon engagement, they said.
