PIL against Kai Po Che for 'biased' portrayal of Gujarat riots

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Gujarat high court seeking cancellation of the Censor Board's clearance to Hindi film `Kai Po Che', claiming that it slanders the Hindu community with its depiction of 2002 communal riots in the state.

A division bench of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala would hear the PIL on June 20. The film, released in February to critical acclaim as well as box office success, is an adoption of the novel `The 3 Mistakes of My Life' by Chetan Bhagat.

Advocate Bhautik Bhatt, the petitioner, says the film depicts incidents related to the riots "with biased intention and half-heartedly only with a view to defaming a particular group of people belonging to Hindu community".

He also demands that riot scenes be deleted or edited and ‘criminal action’ be taken against producers "for defaming the group of Hindus at large". Pending the final decision, the producers should be restrained from selling TV rights and releasing DVD/CD of the film, the petition says.

The judges scheduled the hearing for June 20 after the petitioner said he would provide an official DVD of the film to the court for its viewing.
