The deceased identified as J R Philemon, native of Senapti district in Manipur, was found dead in room no 171 of the Brahmaputra Hostel, police said. Police said the PhD student had not been seen for the last three days.
“When a foul smell started emanating from the room, the student in the neighbouring room called other students and security and forcefully opened door. He was found dead in the room,” he said.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of death.
JNU has been witnessing huge protests since October 15 when another student, Najeeb Ahmed, had gone missing following a brawl in his hostel.
Around a week back, students had confined the vice chancellor and other senior officials in the administrative building for over 20 hours alleging that the authorities weren’t doing enough to find Najeeb Ahmed, who went missing last Saturday following a brawl on the campus allegedly with members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the night before.
On Monday, students even staged a march from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar demanding expedited efforts to trace the student. A delegation of JNU students union went to submit a memorandum to the office of Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung in this regard.
