Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil on Sunday ordered the administration in Mumbra in Thane district to immediately start distributing foodgrains and Rs 5000 to each family affected by last week's rain and flood.

Patil, who was touring various areas in Mumbai suburbs as well as Thane district to review the relief operations, issued the order in response to complaints from residents that assistance was not reaching them.

He said the government would take the assistance of educated youth to carry out relief and rehabilitation measures in view of the acute shortage of revenue personnel.

Referring to the 'careless attitude' of some builders, who had constructed a bypass road through Mumbra that had collapsed killing many people, Patil asked Thane Police Commisioner D Shivanandan to initiate action against them.

"Nobody, however influential he is, will be spared, if found guilty," he said. He was accompanied by Public Works Department Minister Chhagan Bhujbal and Health Minister Vimal Mundada, among others.

Bhujbal said the state was facing several problems and the government's priority was to rehabilitate the affected. Patil and his colleagues also visited Borivali, Chembur and Kalyan areas.
