Passenger held for Delhi hijack drama

The government on Sunday said a couple of passengers onboard the Delhi-bound Indigo flight from Goa had behaved "aggressively" and threatened to "hijack" the aicraft prompting authorities to put in place an emergency drill at the IGI airport in New Delhi.

Civil Aviation Secretary M Madhavan Nambiar told media-persons that all precautionary measures were activated as per the prescribed drill and the aircraft made emergency landing. The plane, flight no. 6E-664, which made an emergency landing at 1729 hours, was taken to an isolated area at the airport and Central Iindustrial Security Force and National Security Guard personnel cordoned off the area.

The committee of secretaries on anti-hijacking chaired by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrashekar met immediately thereafter, Nambiar said. After reviewing all aspects of the situation and satisfying itself that it was safe for the passengers to disembark, the decision was taken to bring the passengers out after they were inside the airplane for about two hours.

When asked about the fate of the couple of unruly passengers, Nambiar said that they are being questioned. Television reports said that the 'unruly' passenger had been arrested and handed over to theDelhi police.
