Pakistan seeks surety from terrorists

November 19, 2003

Pakistani authorities have come up with an alternative to mass arrest of terrorists belonging to banned outfits.

Almost 600 terrorists have been asked to give surety of Rs 100,000 each. If they violate the law, they will be arrested and their surety forfeited, according to a report.

A lot of terrorists were held last year, but the strategy did not work as the judiciary later released them.

Offices of the banned groups are also being closed to deny them a forum, Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat was quoted as saying.
