J&K: One terrorist killed in Pulwama encounter

The fierce encounter in south Kashmir's Pulwama district concluded on Tuesday afternoon after one terrorist was killed while the other reportedly escaped the security cordon.

The encounter started on Monday evening after troops of counter insurgency 53 Rashtriya Rifles and police surrounded a house in Abhama village in Pulwama district on specific information about the presence of a group of Hizbul Mujaheedin terrorists inside it.

"The militants were challenged upon which they opened fire at the surrounding troops. The fire was returned and an encounter ensued which has now ended and one terrorist was killed," a senior police officer said. Police sources said the other terrorist managed to elude them.

The officer, however, said searches are continuing in the village.Troops had suspended the operation on Monday evening as darkness enveloped Abhama village, 54 kms from Srinagar and it was resumed this morning.This is the second encounter in south Kashmir in past one week.
