No evidence to prove Headley visited Goa: Police

The Goa police on Tuesday said it cannot rule out the possibility of American terror suspect and Lashkar-e-Tayiba operative David Headley visiting the state earlier this year but has no conclusive evidence to prove it.

"We are not ruling out his presence but we don't have any conclusive evidence to prove it," Superintendent of Police (Public Relations) Atmaram Deshpande told reporters on Tuesday evening, adding that they had not received any such report from central agencies.

Commenting on media reports emerging from the national capital, he said, "We have nothing to substantiate the media reports. They are just reports."

The national media on Tuesday, quoting officials of the Union Home Ministry, said that Headley had surveyed two prime locations in Goa -- Arambl and Anjuna beaches. The media reports had also mentioned that the National Investigating Agency had questioned a local woman who had rented out her room to Headley in Goa.

Meanwhile, the Goa police have heightened security along the coast in the run-up for Christmas and New Year celebrations. Deshpande said four companies of para-military forces were stationed in the coastal belt, which would work along with the India Reserve Battalion and the local police.
