Major blast in Nigerian capital: CNN

February 02, 2003 19:59 IST

Over two dozen people are feared dead in a massive explosion in an apartment building in Nigeria's capital Lagos, CNN reported on Sunday.

The explosion occurred around 1230 local time on Lagos Island -- the centre of the business district.

Several people are feared trapped in the debris.

Locals have launched rescue efforts and already recovered several bodies.

A nearby bank, which had been destroyed in the blast, was being looted, CNN reported.

Last year, a series of explosions at an army munitions depot in Lagos had killed more than 1,000 people.
