The National Commission for Women has received 86,364 complaints since 2007 and action was taken against in around 20,000 cases, government told the Rajya Sabha on Friday, adding that the commission is dealing with the backlog on priority.
"So far around 20,000 cases have been acted upon, of which 10,083 cases have been closed by the commission. The commission is dealing with the backlog on priority," Minister of State for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath told the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
In a written reply to the House, she said, "The commission has informed that they have received 86,364 complaint cases from 2007 till Aug 2012, including around 66,000 cases that required reconciliation."
On pendency of cases, she said that government monitors it and a monthly report is called from the NCW regarding disposal of cases.
She also tabled a report on the nature of complaints received by the Commission and the action taken against these. "The complaints of police apathy/inaction are forwarded to the concerned state governments for ensuring a timely and fair investigation of the matter. The Action Taken Report thus received from corresponding state governments are examined and further monitored," Tirath said.
For serious crime, the NCW constitutes inquiry committees which makes on the spot inquiries, examines various witnesses, collects evidences and submits report with recommendations.
Tirath said that such investigations help in providing immediate relief and justice to the victims of violence and atrocities, adding that the matrimonial disputes are resolved through counselling of both the parties.
