AIADMK to abstain from voting in LS

August 18, 2003

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will abstain from voting in the Congress-sponsored no-confidence motion against the government in the Lok Sabha, party chief J Jayalalithaa said in Chennai on Monday.

The party will also not participate in the debate.

Jayalalithaa, after a meeting of the party's executive, said nobody from the Centre had contacted her and the AIADMK would not offer support to the government on its own.

Moreover, the government was not in danger and so the AIADMK's support was not required, she said.

She said Defence Minister George Fernandes, two days ago, had attempted to contact her but she was not available. "I do not know for why he had attempted to contact me," she added.
