US slams India over Myanmar
October 29, 2004 10:37 IST
Washington has expressed its displeasure over India's red carpet treatment for Myanmar's military ruler General Than Shwe, citing concerns over human right abuses in his country.

"We hope that the government of India will convey to Than Shwe during his visit concerns shared by the international community," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Thursday.

New Delhi should also convey concerns over the Myanmar junta's failure to engage in a meaningful dialogue with other political and ethnic leaders in the country, and the junta should ensure that the fundamental rights of the people of Myanmar are respected, he said.

The general arrived in New Delhi on Sunday with eight cabinet ministers on a six-day visit, the first visit by a head of state in 24 years.
