'My father, the President, has been hurt by my remarks'

Abhijit Mukherjee, son of President Pranab Mukherjee, said he was willing to resign for his remarks if the party wants him to do so. Abhijit Mukherjee's came under attack after he made a controversial sexist remark.

"If quitting would help the party I am willing to step down," Abhijit Mukherjee told CNN-IBN.

Mukherjee, who had come under immense fire for his controversial remarks against women protesters inĀ Delhi, accepted to CNN-IBN that his remarks have generated a "huge controversy" and that he now intends to "withdraw his remarks completely."

President's son also said it was not appropriate to bring in President's office into the entire controversy and added that his remarks had generated a lot of controversy which resulted in hurting his father and sister.

"My father and sister have been hurt and I apologise to both of them," Abhijit Mukherjee told CNN-IBN.

"I have no right to hurt others and neither others have the right to drag my father's (President) office into the controversy," Abhijit Mukherjee added.

Mukherjee said it is for the women to decide what they want to wear and it is the responsibility of the government to protect its citizens, including women.

An MP from Jangipur constituency in West Bengal, Abhijit Mukherjee courted controversy today when he said the recent protests in the capital over the gang-rape of a 23-year-old in a moving bus did not appear to involve students and ladies coming out to protest are 'highly dented and painted'.
