President Pervez Musharraf on Thursday said that Russia could help in the resolution of Indo-Pak disputes.

"Russia, with long relations with India and now improving relations with Pakistan, is most well-placed to play a key role in resolution of disputes and improving relations between India and Pakistan," he told a press conference briefing on the talks that he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.

Musharraf, the first Pakistani head of state to visit Russia in three decades, said that the Kashmir issue was discussed during the five-and-a-half hour interaction that he had with Putin and 'there were points of convergence and divergence'.

He said: "We did discuss Pakistan-India relations... obviously, the focal point is Kashmir, but we did not get involved in the methodology of its resolution.

"I did thank him for his efforts at the CICA summit in Almaty. Unfortunately, a meeting with [Prime Minister Atal Bihari] Vajpayee failed to take off… [but] not because of me," Musharraf said, adding Putin had promised to remain engaged in South Asia peace efforts.
