Five suspected members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena on Tuesday smashed the entrance glass of an Airtel outlet in Mumbai to protest the private telecom major not using Marathi language prominently in a customer interactive system, police said.

The system, Interactive Voice Response, is a recording mechanism used by the customers for assistance related to their phone services.

According to Senior Inspector Prakash George, the five came on bikes and pelted stones at the entrance glass of the outlet in suburban Bandra before speeding away.

The employees at the outlet told the police they had received a letter two weeks ago from the Raj Thackeray-led party asking them to include Marathi in their IVR as the first language.

The letter had been forwarded to the Airtel headquarters. The stones were wrapped in MNS flags, the employees reportedly told the police. No arrest has been made so far, they said adding further probe was on.
