Mumbai airport, Gujarat on high alert

The security at the Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji airport and across Guajrat has been tightened in view of an alert sent by central agencies, reports Vicky Nanjappa. 

A high alert has been sounded across the country in wake of the heightened threat perception. The Intelligence Bureau and the home ministry have issued an advisory directing the police of all states to remain on their toes.

The threat perception had increased following an email received by media houses after the Delhi high court blast, which warned of an attack in Gujarat on September 13. Although it has been found that the email was a hoax, the police are taking no chances. The advisory that has been put out is not specific in nature.

It has been seen in the past that such emails have been often sent out to create distraction. The threat perception is high at Mumbai's Chathrapathi Shivaji Airport and in Gujarat. Security has been beefed up across all major cities and airports and in Delhi alone nearly 20,000 police personnel have been deployed.  

Sources in the IB say that no terror group in particular is planning on carrying out an attack, but they could use the volatile situation to strike in order to cause panic. Moreover, Tuesday marks the third anniversary of the 2008 Delhi serial blasts that claimed over 20 lives and the security agencies are unwilling to take any chances.
