The Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday told the Supreme Court that it has concluded the preliminary inquiry into the alleged accumulation of disproportionate assets by former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family members.
In its affidavit, the investigating agency, however, said that it was willing to place the status report directly before the apex court, instead of submitting the same to the Central government.
The CBI's offer to place the material directly before the apex court goes contrary to the Supreme Court's directive on March 1, 2007, to the investigating agency to place the report before the Central government.
Quoting rules, the CBI through its counsel P Parmeswaran submitted that as per the practice, after a preliminary inquiry undertaken by it which discloses commission of offence by the persons concerned, a regular case is registered and investigation in accordance with law is undertaken.
"In the matter of registration of a case, the CBI/applicant does not make a reference either to the Central government or the state government," the agency said.
