Authorities imposed restriction in parts of Jammu and Kashmir summer capital Srinagar and disallowed the main Muharram procession from city centre Lal Chowk on Tuesday.

However, other processions in the city interior and in central Kashmir's Budgam town were allowed by the authorities under heavy security.

Early on Tuesday morning police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force troops were moved out and deployed in strength in the uptown areas around Lal Chowk to enforce security restrictions to foil the main Muharram procession.

No movement was allowed in the areas where the restrictions paralysed normal life.

However, the day passed off peacefully as all the processions ended in capital Srinagar and in Budgam town on Tuesday evening.

On Sunday hundreds of Shia mourners had clashed with security forces in the uptown Srinagar where authorities had disallowed the procession.

Several mourners were injured while dozens others were detained.
