After a lull in the normalisation process between India and Pakistan, things picked up steam yet again on Friday, with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh kicking off the Amritsar-Nankana Sahib bus service between the two nations.
More importantly, he offered Pakistan a 'treaty of peace, security and friendship' which he said would be the culmination of the peace process.
'I have a vision that the peace-making process must culminate in our two countries entering into a treaty of peace, security and friendship to give meaning and substance to our quest for shared goals,' Singh said in Amritsar. 'I make this offer to the people of Pakistan on this historic occasion. I am sure the leadership of Pakistan will reciprocate.'
While peace has its own dividends, is it premature to talk of a peace and friendship treaty with Pakistan, without first ensuring that all outstanding issues between the two sides, including Kashmir and cross-border terrorism, are resolved first?
Will the move boomerang on India by being seen as a sign of weakness?
